Iran elections have history of dark horses

Image
Iran elections have history of dark horses Election season is under way in Iran and the rumour mill is in overdrive as the public tries to divine the backroom machinations that have thrown up major surprises in the past. “I looked back at the cables our embassy was sending out just a few weeks before the last election,” said a Western diplomat in Tehran. “None of them were predicting (Hassan) Rouhani would win,” she laughed, referring to the current president. Rouhani, a moderate cleric with a long history in Iran’s security apparatus, won the 2013 after the only other pro-reform candidate dropped out to boost his chances. Having overseen a slight easing in social restrictions and rebuilt relations with the West through the 2015 nuclear deal, Rouhani seemed like a shoo-in to win a second term at next month’s election. But he faces a tougher-than-expected fight as the conservative opposition rallies around two hardliners — cleric and judge Ebrahim Raisi and Tehran mayor Mohamm...

Editor's note: Nigeria as a nation is sick and is in dire need of a healing. Daily the media is fed full with disturbing stories of killing, cases of defilement, kidnapping, electoral violence and a dwindling economy. It won't be out of place to say that all we see these days only depict a future so bleak. The innocents have no say while the guilty ones pay their way out; the masses have lost faith in the judiciary. Faith needs to be rekindled and hope needs to be restored. It is in an attempt to give back voice to the oppressed of the society, that caliphmd.blogspot.com has put together a collection of poems from a great generation of poets whose works have the potentials to bring about the desired change needed at this moment. A statement signed by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Desmond Agbama, said the monarch noted that despite the tribunal’s verdict, there was no victor no vanquished in the election. Yesterday, Stella Damasus reposted the picture of Doris Simon’s son on her Instagram page, wishing him a happy birthday but some people are trolling her for it. The actress whose skin seem to have grown thicker against internet trolls gave a piece of her own. She said, With all the things that are happening in the world, with all the recession people are complaining about, with all the people who are dying everyday, with all the injustice in the world, this right here is what some people have decided to dwell on. Funny how the same issue has given some people high blood pressure for the past 4 years. Funny how the same people cannot realize that regardless of what they say behind their phones, nothing has changed. In fact it’s getting better and stronger. Funny how wishing an amazing young man happy birthday just to celebrate him will cause people to bring out the ugliness in their hearts and their hatred for humanity. So sad that this wonderful young man will look at comme...

We all react differently when going through a tough time. While some women talk to people around them and seek a shoulder to lean on, some women withdraw from people around them and go deep within themselves to find their own way out. They both have their pros and cons. In a series of tweet,  Lota Chukwu who is well known for her role as Kiki in Jenifa’s Diary, shares how she used to withdraw from people and liked to be by herself when facing challenges. She says it is not always the best. She tweeted, So, I want to talk about talking about stuff you go through. So today, I got put on blast by my entire family because “your mind is too deep.” What that means is I don’t talk about stuff. This is a character trait I have had for the longest time. I find it so difficult talking about stuff I am going through. I can literally be depressed and lock myself up in my house for weeks and talk to nobody and just be on my own and say “I am fine” if asked. People who know me ca...
